I know that Valentine's Day is already past...but this is an idea that you can use all year long, not just when you're making heart-shaped sugar cookies.
So I like sugar cookies, sometimes...when it tastes just right. My husband really isn't enthusiastic about sugar cookies, but he'll eat one if it's there and he's hungry. With my latest discovery, however, it has changed our world of sugar cookies forever. Seriously, they are that good!
What is this redefined sugar cookie, you ask? It's in the frosting. Instead of making a typical buttercream frosting with butter and powdered sugar together, I add one new secret ingredient: powdered fruit! People, this frosting is to die for!! Once you've tasted it, you will manage to eat a whole plate of sugar cookies with the fruit frosting on top, and wonder if there's more hiding somewhere. It's that good!
Not only does it taste A-MAZING...but it also provides a natural food coloring in the frosting, so you don't have to add any food coloring to it! Have you ever tasted a beautiful, vibrant red frosting with red food coloring, only to spit it out because the chemical flavor is overpowering? Next time, try powdering some cherries or strawberries and mixing that into your frosting. Problem solved. No more nasty chemical flavor, and instead you get the amazing added flavor of strawberries in your frosting instead! Or, if you don't want the color of your frosting to change, but you still want the boost of flavor, powder some pineapples or bananas and add that to your frosting - it won't change the color, but the flavor will sure be different. I will never go back. I wonder what would happen if I powder broccoli to get a nice pretty green colored frosting? Hmmm....ok maybe that's taking it too far.
One thing to note: since you are adding powdered fruit to the frosting...you won't need as much powdered sugar as you normally would. The powdered fruit just takes the place of some of the powdered sugar.
So, here's what I did:
Use to spread on cookies, cupcakes, or frost a cake.Try not to eat all of the frosting before you put it on the cookies ...Make a second batch for your cookies if the first batch doesn't quite make it to the cookies before it gets eaten.
Prep time: 5 minutes. Makes about 1 cup of frosting.

So, here's what I did:
Fruity Frosting
2-3 cups freeze-dried fruit (depending on the fruit, and how strong of flavor you want – this really varies) I recommend using strawberries, peaches, blueberries, pineapple, or bananas. But you can get creative and use any fruit that you want.
1/2 cup softened butter
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 – 1 Tbsp. milk or water (optional)
Put Thrive freeze dried fruit in a blender, and blend to a powder - it will take about 5 seconds on high. Whip butter until it is light and creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and powdered fruit to butter, and continue to whip it in until the consistency is smooth and light. You may want to adjust the amounts of powdered sugar or fruit, depending on your tastes. If it gets too thick, gradually add 1-2 Tbsp milk or water to help soften everything and get a smoother texture.
